Frequently Asked Questions

First measure the area (length x width) or room perimeter. Enter the dimensions in the appropriate tab of the calculator and select your material. The calculator automatically adds the necessary waste and creates a shopping list with the correct order quantity.

As a rule of thumb: 10% waste for simple rectangular rooms with straight laying. For diagonal installation or complex room shapes, plan for 15%. For herringbone patterns or rooms with many angles, even 20% is advisable. The calculator accounts for waste automatically based on the laying pattern.

With diagonal installation, tiles meet the walls at a 45-degree angle. This means tiles must be cut at an angle at every edge, and the offcuts are often too small for other positions. This results in 10-15% more material consumption compared to straight laying.

Coverage depends heavily on the surface and paint type. On smooth plaster, about 100 ml of emulsion paint per m2 per coat is sufficient. On woodchip wallpaper, consumption rises to about 140 ml/m2. Always plan for at least two coats - for dark colors or color changes, even three.

One cubic meter of gravel weighs between 1,700 and 1,900 kg depending on grain size and moisture, averaging about 1,800 kg (1.8 tonnes). Sand is slightly lighter at about 1,600 kg/m3, while aggregate is similar at about 1,800 kg/m3. Note: with compaction you need 15-25% more volume.

First calculate the room area (length x width) and add 10% waste. Then divide the total area by the pack coverage (listed on the packaging, usually about 2 m2). A 20 m2 room with 10% waste needs 22 m2, which equals about 11 packs at 2 m2 content.

Use the calculator to determine the exact order quantity and print the shopping list. Always order slightly more than calculated - for tiles 1-2 extra boxes, for wallpaper one reserve roll. This protects against breakage, cutting errors, and future repairs.

For bulk materials like gravel or sand, expect about EUR 80 base fee plus about EUR 2.50 per kilometer distance. A truck holds 15-18 tonnes - smaller quantities are more expensive per tonne. Hardware stores often deliver tiles and flooring free within their area for orders above EUR 50-100.

Most hardware stores accept unbroken original packaging within 30 days. This does not apply to custom cuts or mixed paints. For tiles, it is still worth keeping 1-2 boxes as reserve - reordering later may result in a different batch with color variation.

Simple painting and laminate installation are well suited for DIY - the material calculator helps with planning. Tiling requires more experience, especially diagonal patterns and wet areas. For bulk material projects like paving or drainage, a professional is often worthwhile as mistakes can be costly.
