The basic formula is: Percentage value = (Percentage / 100) x Base value. For example, to calculate 19% of 250: (19 / 100) x 250 = 47.50. The percentage indicates how many hundredths of a value are meant. Our percentage calculator offers five different calculation modes so you can solve any common percentage task.

19% of 100 is 19. The calculation is straightforward: (19 / 100) x 100 = 19. This is the standard VAT rate in Germany. If a product costs EUR 100 net, the VAT is EUR 19 and the gross amount is EUR 119.

Net to gross: Gross = Net x 1.19 (at 19% VAT) or Net x 1.07 (at 7%). Gross to net: Net = Gross / 1.19 or Gross / 1.07. Extract VAT amount: VAT = Gross - (Gross / 1.19). In Germany, two rates apply: 19% (standard) and 7% (reduced, e.g. food, books).

Discounted price = Original price x (1 - Discount / 100). Example: 20% discount on EUR 89.99: 89.99 x (1 - 20/100) = 89.99 x 0.80 = EUR 71.99. You save EUR 18.00. With stacked discounts (e.g. 20% + 10%), multiply the factors: 0.80 x 0.90 = 0.72, so 28% total discount, not 30%.

Percentage points describe the absolute difference between two percentage values. Example: If an interest rate rises from 2% to 3%, that's an increase of 1 percentage point, but a 50% increase (since 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%). This distinction is particularly important for interest rates, tax rates, and surveys.

Percentage change = ((New value - Old value) / |Old value|) x 100. A positive result means increase, negative means decrease. Example: From 200 to 250 = ((250 - 200) / 200) x 100 = +25%. From 250 to 200 = ((200 - 250) / 250) x 100 = -20%. Note: The change is not symmetric!

Gross = Net x (1 + Tax rate / 100). At 19% VAT: Gross = Net x 1.19. At 7% VAT: Gross = Net x 1.07. Reverse from gross to net: Net = Gross / 1.19 (or / 1.07). Use the VAT quick buttons in our calculator for instant results.

Tip = Bill amount x (Tip percentage / 100). In Germany, 5-10% is customary. For a EUR 45 bill with 10% tip: 45 x 0.10 = EUR 4.50 tip, so EUR 49.50 total. Quick trick: 10% = move the decimal one place (45.00 becomes 4.50).

The word 'percent' comes from the Latin 'pro centum' meaning 'per hundred'. So 25% means '25 out of 100' or one quarter. The percent sign (%) is an abbreviation of this relationship. Percentage calculation is a form of fraction arithmetic where the denominator is always 100: 25% = 25/100 = 0.25.

Best tricks: 10% = move the decimal (350 becomes 35). 5% = half of 10%. 1% = move decimal two places. 15% = 10% + 5%. 20% = double 10%. 25% = divide by 4. 50% = halve it. 75% = 50% + 25%. For 19% VAT: Calculate 20% and subtract 1% (or x 0.2 minus x 0.01).
