Laminate vs. Vinyl: Key Differences
Both floor coverings are popular for renovations, but they differ fundamentally in material, properties, and price. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
Material and Construction
Laminate consists of an HDF carrier board with a printed decorative layer and a protective overlay. At its core, it is a wood product. Click vinyl consists of multiple PVC layers with a printed decor. Some vinyl floors have an SPC core (Stone Polymer Composite) for better stability.
Moisture Resistance
This is the biggest difference: laminate is sensitive to moisture. The HDF carrier board swells on water contact and deforms permanently. Laminate does not belong in bathrooms, kitchens (directly at the sink area), or basements. Vinyl is completely waterproof and can be installed anywhere — including bathrooms and terraces.
Cost Comparison
Entry prices: laminate from EUR 8/m2, click vinyl from EUR 15/m2. Mid-range: laminate EUR 15-25/m2, vinyl EUR 20-35/m2. Premium: laminate EUR 25-40/m2, vinyl EUR 35-60/m2. Add underlay for both (EUR 2-4/m2), skirting boards (EUR 3-8/lfm), and for laminate a PE vapor barrier (EUR 1-2/m2). Overall, vinyl is 30-50% more expensive than comparable laminate.
Durability and Care
Good laminate (wear class 32-33) lasts 15-25 years. Click vinyl has a similar lifespan but is more scratch-sensitive. Both are easy to maintain — damp mopping is sufficient. Laminate should only be wiped slightly damp, vinyl tolerates wetter mopping.
Installation and Material Needs
Both are installed as click systems that DIYers can manage. Waste is comparable: 5-10% for straight laying, 10-15% for diagonal. Material needs are calculated identically: room area plus waste, divided by pack coverage. Our material calculator computes the exact quantity for both flooring types.
Conclusion
Laminate is the more affordable choice for dry living spaces. Vinyl is the better option for wet rooms, kitchens, and when impact sound is a concern. Both coverings look convincingly real thanks to modern printing technology and offer good value for money.
