Gravel, Sand & Aggregate: Calculate Quantities Correctly

Calculating Bulk Materials Correctly

Gravel, sand, aggregate, and other bulk materials are ordered in cubic meters (m3) but delivered in tonnes (t). For the correct order quantity, you need to know three things: the required volume, the bulk density of your material, and whether compaction needs to be factored in.

Calculating Volume

The basic formula is simple: area times layer depth. For a gravel surface of 5 x 3 meters with 10 cm depth, you need: 15 m2 x 0.10 m = 1.5 m3. For circular areas (wells, round beds), calculate with pi times radius squared times depth. Triangular areas: base times height divided by 2 times depth.

Bulk Density: From m3 to Tonnes

Every material has a different bulk density. Gravel weighs about 1,800 kg/m3 (1.8 t), sand about 1,600 kg/m3, crushed stone and aggregate about 1,700-1,800 kg/m3. Concrete is the heaviest at 2,400 kg/m3. At the other end is bark mulch at only 400 kg/m3. Topsoil weighs about 1,200 kg/m3. Our example with 1.5 m3 gravel: 1.5 x 1,800 = 2,700 kg = 2.7 tonnes.

Don't Forget Compaction

Loosely poured material settles during compaction (vibrating, rolling, natural settling). Compaction factors vary significantly: gravel compacts by about 15%, sand by 20%, aggregate by 25%. This means: if you need 1.5 m3 of compacted gravel, you must order 1.5 x 1.15 = 1.725 m3 of loose gravel. Bark mulch has the strongest effect: 30% compaction, so for 1 m3 finished layer you need 1.3 m3.

Delivery and Costs

Bulk material is delivered by truck. A standard 3-axle truck holds about 15-18 tonnes or 8-10 m3. Delivery costs typically consist of a base fee (EUR 60-100) plus a per-kilometer rate (EUR 2-3/km). For small quantities under 5 tonnes, a big bag (1 m3, about 1.5-1.8 t) can be the cheaper option — these are unloaded by crane and cost EUR 30-80 for delivery plus material price.

Recommended Layer Depths

For garden paths: 5-10 cm gravel on 15-20 cm aggregate base course. For driveways: 20-30 cm aggregate base plus 5 cm crushed stone bedding plus pavers. For plant beds: 3-5 cm bark mulch. For lawn creation: 15-20 cm topsoil. For drainage: 20-40 cm gravel (16/32 mm grain size). Follow these guidelines and you will avoid under- or over-ordering.
