What Is the Commuter Allowance?
The commuter allowance (Entfernungspauschale) is a flat deduction for the distance between home and workplace. It applies regardless of transport mode -- car, train, bicycle or on foot.
How to Calculate the 2026 Commuter Allowance
The calculation is simple: One-way distance x rates x working days. First 20 km: EUR 0.30 per km. From 21st km: EUR 0.38 per km. Only the one-way distance counts.
Calculation Example
At 30 km one-way distance and 220 working days: First 20 km: 20 x EUR 0.30 x 220 = EUR 1,320. From 21st km: 10 x EUR 0.38 x 220 = EUR 836. Total: EUR 2,156 commuter allowance.
Important Tips
The shortest road connection counts, not the actual route driven. Exception: A longer route is allowed if it's more practical. For public transport users: If the annual ticket costs more than the commuter allowance, you can claim the actual amount instead.
Combining with Home Office
On home office days, the commuter allowance doesn't apply. Instead, the home office deduction of EUR 6 per day kicks in. It's important to document home office and office days clearly.
