Tutoring Costs: What Is a Fair Price?

Tutoring is a billion-euro market in Germany. Around 1.2 million students regularly receive tutoring, and prices vary considerably. This article provides an overview of current prices, different formats and helps assess when tutoring is really worthwhile.

Prices by Format

Individual tutoring from a qualified tutor costs between 25 and 45 euros per hour. Depending on the tutor's qualifications (student, trained pedagogue, subject teacher) and region, prices can be higher. In major cities like Munich or Hamburg, 40 to 50 euros is not uncommon.

Group tutoring at commercial providers like Studienkreis, Schuelerhilfe or Kumon typically costs 15 to 25 euros per hour on a subscription model. Most providers work with contract terms of 3 to 12 months. Pay attention to cancellation periods and contract conditions.

Online tutoring has established itself as a cheaper alternative. Platforms like GoStudent, Easy-Tutor or Superprof offer individual lessons from 10 to 25 euros per hour. The advantage: the selection of tutors is larger, and there is no travel time.

Free tutoring is available through school-based programs (students helping students), volunteer tutoring initiatives, online platforms like Khan Academy or YouTube channels, and learning apps providing basic practice opportunities.

When Is Tutoring Worthwhile?

Tutoring is particularly worthwhile for temporary learning gaps (after illness or school change), when retention is threatened, for preparation for important exams (final exams, Abitur), and when the child has specific comprehension difficulties in a subject.

Tutoring is less useful when the cause of poor grades is not academic in nature, but rather lies in motivational problems, social difficulties or overload from too many activities.

Financial Support for Tutoring

The Education and Participation package covers tutoring costs when the school confirms the need and promotion is at risk. The application is submitted to the job center or social services office. Many families do not know they have this entitlement and thus miss out on real money.
