School Supplies Checklist: What Do You Really Need?
Every school year brings the same challenge: the school supplies list. Whether first grader or upper secondary student, the right equipment is important for a successful school day. But what do you really need, and where can unnecessary expenses be avoided?
Primary School (Grades 1-4): The Basic Equipment
For primary school students, the school bag is the largest single purchase. Good ergonomic models cost between 150 and 280 euros. Important features are reflective surfaces for safety, a weight under 1.3 kg when empty, and an ergonomic fit that can grow with the child.
The typical supplies list for primary school includes: pencil case with pens (15-40 euros), notebooks in various rulings (10-20 euros), quick folders in various colors (5-10 euros), watercolors and brushes (10-20 euros), drawing pad DIN A3 (3-5 euros), glue and scissors (5-10 euros), gym bag with sports shoes and clothing (30-60 euros), lunch box and water bottle (15-30 euros).
Total primary school costs per year: 80-250 euros (without bag), first year 250-500 euros (with bag).
Secondary School (Grades 5-10)
From fifth grade, requirements change significantly. Instead of the rigid school bag, a school backpack is usually used (30-80 euros). New subjects bring new material needs: set square and compass for mathematics (10-20 euros), scientific calculator (20-30 euros), literature for German class (30-60 euros per year), art materials (20-40 euros), binders and dividers instead of folders.
Many schools increasingly require digital devices from grade 5 or 7. A tablet or laptop can cost 300 to 800 euros. Some schools provide loan devices or offer affordable group orders. Check the school's requirements before purchasing.
Total secondary school costs per year: 100-350 euros.
Upper Secondary (Grades 11-13)
In upper secondary, material costs rise further. Graphic calculators (CAS), mandatory at many grammar schools, cost 80 to 150 euros. Specialist textbooks cost 20 to 40 euros each. Special materials, printouts and binding are often needed for term papers (20-50 euros).
Total upper secondary costs per year: 120-400 euros.
Saving Strategies for School Supplies
Take advantage of discounter special weeks before school starts. Aldi, Lidl and others offer notebooks, pens and accessories 30 to 50 percent cheaper than specialist retailers. Drugstore chains like dm and Rossmann also have affordable own-brand products.
Buy brand products selectively: For fountain pens, set squares and calculators, quality pays off as these products last for years. For consumables like notebooks and pens, the cheaper option works just fine.
Organize group orders with other parents. Many retailers offer discounts for larger quantities. This works particularly well for workbooks that every child must buy new.
