Buying a School Bag: What Parents Should Know and What It Costs

The school bag is not just a practical companion for everyday school life but also an important investment in the child's health. A poorly fitting or too heavy bag can lead to posture damage. This guide explains what parents should look for and what a good school bag costs.

Price Classes at a Glance

Budget school bag sets are available from 80 to 120 euros, though compromises on ergonomics and workmanship must be accepted. In the mid-range segment (150-220 euros), solid models from brands like McNeill, DerDieDas or Belmil with good ergonomics and reflective surfaces can be found.

Premium school bags from ergobag, Scout or Step by Step cost 200 to 280 euros. These offer the best ergonomics, high-quality materials, growing back systems and comprehensive sets with pencil case, gym bag and accessories. Individual premium models or limited editions can also exceed 300 euros.

What to Look for When Buying

Ergonomics is the most important criterion. A good school bag has a padded, growing back system, chest and hip straps for weight distribution, wide and padded shoulder straps, and an empty weight of no more than 1.3 kilograms.

Safety is also crucial. DIN 58124 requires at least 20 percent of the top and side surfaces to be made of fluorescent material (orange or yellow) and at least 10 percent of retroreflective material. Look for DIN certification.

Volume and layout should suit everyday school life. A capacity of 15 to 20 liters is ideal for primary school. Interior pockets and compartments help with organizing. A separate side pocket for the water bottle is practical.

When to Buy

The best time to buy is spring before enrollment (February to April). New models are then available, and specialist retailers offer consultation appointments with fitting. Alternatively, previous year models can be purchased significantly cheaper in summer, often with 30 to 50 percent discount.

School Bag vs. School Backpack

From 3rd or 4th grade, many children switch from the classic rigid school bag to a school backpack. Backpacks offer more storage space, are lighter and are perceived as cooler by older children. Ergonomic school backpacks from Satch, coocazoo or Deuter cost 80 to 160 euros and offer similarly good carrying systems as rigid school bags.
