What Does a Tradesperson Charge Per Hour?
Labor costs are one of the largest items in any renovation. But what does a tradesperson's hour actually cost, and why are there such large price differences? In this article, we break down hourly rates by trade and region and provide tips for cost optimization.
Hourly Rates by Trade (Net, Excluding Materials)
Painters and Decorators: 40 to 55 Euros Per Hour
Painters are among the more affordable tradespeople. The average hourly rate is 45 euros net. Painting work can be done well as DIY, which is why many clients only hire professionals for more demanding tasks (lacquer work, facade painting).
Tilers: 45 to 65 Euros Per Hour
Tilers charge an average of 55 euros per hour. Alternatively, they often charge per square meter: 40 to 70 euros per square meter for standard installation, 60 to 100 euros per square meter for mosaic tiles or natural stone. Complex patterns or large-format tiles increase costs further.
Electricians: 50 to 70 Euros Per Hour
Electrical installations may only be carried out by licensed contractors (for connection work). The hourly rate for electricians averages 60 euros. Smaller jobs like replacing outlets often take less than a full hour but are frequently charged with a call-out fee (30 to 50 euros).
Plumbers: 55 to 80 Euros Per Hour
Plumbers are among the more expensive tradespeople. The high hourly rate is explained by the lengthy training, the responsibility (water damage from faulty work can cost thousands of euros), and the frequently required emergency call-outs. A master plumbing firm often charges 65 to 80 euros per hour.
Carpenters and Joiners: 50 to 75 Euros Per Hour
Carpenters and joiners are needed for doors, built-in wardrobes, kitchen installation, and staircase renovation. The hourly rate averages 60 euros. For custom work, a fixed price is often agreed upon.
Drywall Installers: 40 to 60 Euros Per Hour
Drywall work (plasterboard walls, suspended ceilings) costs 45 to 55 euros per hour. Alternatively, they charge per square meter: 30 to 60 euros per square meter for a simple drywall partition.
Regional Price Differences
Tradesperson costs vary significantly across Germany by region. The most expensive regions are Munich and Upper Bavaria (plus 15 to 20 percent), Hamburg (plus 12 to 15 percent), and Stuttgart and the Rhine-Main area (plus 10 to 15 percent). North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony are at the national average. The most affordable are the eastern states: Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (minus 10 to 15 percent).
Why Are Tradespeople So Expensive?
A tradesperson's gross hourly rate consists of the journeyman's wage (20 to 25 euros gross), employer's social contributions (approximately 21 percent), operating costs (tools, vehicle, insurance, office), profit and reserves, and VAT (19 percent). Of an hourly rate of 60 euros net, the journeyman receives only about 15 to 18 euros net. The rest covers operating costs and the business owner's income.
Tips for Cost Optimization
1. Get multiple quotes: compare at least three different quotes.
2. Handle auxiliary work yourself: clearance, masking, and disposal.
3. Agree on flat rates instead of hourly billing: for clearly defined work, negotiate a fixed price.
4. Use the off-season: January to March and November are the quietest months for tradespeople.
5. Deduct tradesperson costs from taxes: 20 percent of labor costs (max. 1,200 euros per year) can be deducted from income tax (Section 35a Income Tax Act).
