How do I calculate the value of gold?

Gold value = weight in grams × fineness ÷ 1,000 × gold price per gram. A 10-gram ring made of 585 (14k) gold contains 5.85 g of fine gold. At €120 per gram, the melt value is €702. What you actually receive when selling is the buy-back value: melt value minus the dealer's discount.

What is 585 gold worth per gram?

585 gold consists of 58.5% fine gold, so one gram is worth 0.585 × the gold price. At the example price of €120 per gram (as of 24 Sept 2026), that is about €70.20 melt value; after a 15% buy-back discount roughly €59.67. For 750 gold it would be €90 melt value, for 333 gold just under €40.

What do the stamps 333, 585, 750 and 999 mean?

The number states the fineness in thousandths. 333 equals 8 karat (33.3% gold), 375 equals 9 karat, 585 equals 14 karat, 750 equals 18 karat, 916 equals 22 karat and 999 is fine gold at 24 karat. For silver, 800, 835 and 925 (sterling) as well as 999 (fine silver) are common.

Why do I get less than the gold price when selling?

The gold price refers to fine gold in large bars. Buyers have to test, melt and refine scrap gold and want to make a margin, so they deduct a discount. For bars and common bullion coins it is usually small (2–5%), for scrap and broken jewellery often 10–25%. Get several offers and ask to see the weighing.

Do I have to pay tax when selling gold?

Privately held physical gold falls under § 23 EStG in Germany. If more than one year lies between purchase and sale, the gain is tax-free. With a shorter holding period, the gain is only tax-free if all private disposal gains of the year total less than €1,000 (exemption limit since 2024). If it is reached, the entire gain is taxable.

What is investment gold and why is it VAT-free?

Investment gold under § 25c UStG means bars or wafers of at least 995 fineness and gold coins of at least 900 fineness that were minted after 1800, are or were legal tender in their country of origin and sell for no more than 80% above their gold value. Their supply is VAT-exempt. Gold jewellery does not qualify.

How many grams are in an ounce of gold?

Precious metals are traded in troy ounces: 1 ounce = 31.1034768 grams. That is more than the common avoirdupois ounce of about 28.35 g. A one-ounce coin of 999 gold therefore contains roughly 31.07 g of fine gold. In the calculator you can enter weight and price in grams or ounces.
