Overview: Subsidies for Balcony Solar 2026
In addition to the nationwide 0% VAT on solar systems under 30 kWp, there are numerous municipal subsidy programs that additionally support the purchase of a balcony solar system. The subsidy landscape is, however, complex -- every city and municipality has its own programs, funding amounts, and prerequisites.
Below we provide an overview of the most important types of subsidies, typical funding amounts, and tips on how to get the maximum grant for your balcony solar system.
Nationwide Support: 0% VAT
The most important support is not a traditional subsidy but a tax discount: since January 1, 2023, 0% VAT applies to the purchase and installation of solar systems under 30 kWp. This saves about EUR 114 on an 800-watt system (gross price: about EUR 714 at 19% VAT). This benefit applies automatically -- you do not need to apply for it.
Important: the 0% VAT applies to modules, inverters, mounting systems, cables, plugs, and accessories. Battery storage systems are also included. The regulation is currently indefinite.
Municipal Subsidy Programs
Many cities and municipalities have established their own subsidy programs for balcony solar systems. Funding amounts vary widely -- typically EUR 50 to 500 per system. Some examples for 2026: Berlin funds up to EUR 500 (SolarPLUS program). Munich provides EUR 0.40 per Wp, up to EUR 320 for 800-watt systems. Cologne offers a flat rate of EUR 200.
Hamburg provides EUR 200-400 depending on the district. Stuttgart funds through the Solar Offensive program with up to EUR 300. Dusseldorf offers EUR 100-200 for tenant households. Freiburg subsidizes up to EUR 200 with simultaneous energy consultation.
Funding pools are often limited and quickly depleted. Inform yourself early on your city or municipality's website. Many programs are relaunched at the beginning of the year.
State Subsidies
Some federal states offer supplementary subsidy programs. North Rhine-Westphalia funds consultation services and storage through progres.nrw. Lower Saxony subsidizes small PV systems in the Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency program. Saxony funds balcony solar systems for tenants through the Saxony Energy program.
State subsidies are often linked to conditions: energy consultation, minimum sizes, or the use of certified products. Check the current conditions on your federal state's website.
Tips for Maximum Funding
Tip 1: Combine subsidies. In many cases, municipal and state subsidies can be combined. Check the accumulation rules in the funding guidelines. Tip 2: Submit the application before purchasing. Most subsidy programs require that the application be submitted before the purchase date. A retroactive application will be rejected.
Tip 3: Use special subsidies for tenants. Some programs like Berlin's SolarPLUS offer higher grants for tenant households. Tip 4: Inquire with your energy provider. Some municipal utilities offer their own grants -- for example, a bonus on the electricity tariff for balcony solar owners.
Tip 5: Observe documentation requirements. Keep all invoices and document the installation with photos. Subsidy applications typically require a copy of the invoice and proof of commissioning.
Subsidy Calculator: How Much Can You Save?
Without subsidies, an 800-watt system costs EUR 600 with a payback of 4.3 years. With EUR 200 municipal subsidy, the net investment drops to EUR 400 -- payback in 2.9 years. With EUR 300 subsidy: EUR 300 net, payback in 2.2 years. With EUR 500 subsidy (e.g., Berlin): EUR 100 net, payback in 0.7 years.
Conclusion: Use Subsidies, but Don't Wait
Municipal subsidies are a nice bonus but should not lead to postponement. The annual savings of a balcony solar system amount to EUR 100-200. Every month of waiting for a subsidy costs EUR 8-17 in foregone savings. If a subsidy is available: take it. If not: buy anyway -- the investment pays off even without a grant.
