Guide: Cost of Living

Cost of living encompasses all regular expenses required for daily life. This includes rent, groceries, transportation, utilities (electricity, water, heating), healthcare, and leisure activities. The term describes how much money you need monthly to maintain your standard of living in a particular country or city. Our calculator compares these costs across six main categories and 55+ countries, giving you a realistic picture of the financial requirements at different locations.

Our calculator is based on average values and index data that are regularly updated. The data comes from publicly accessible sources and international cost comparisons. Actual costs can vary significantly depending on city, neighborhood, and personal lifestyle. For example, living costs in Lisbon are considerably lower than in the tourist-heavy Algarve region. The calculator provides a solid orientation for planning but does not replace detailed local research. We recommend using the results as a starting point and supplementing them with local sources.

The three lifestyle tiers reflect different standards of living: Budget means a frugal lifestyle with shared housing or a small studio, cooking at home, and public transport. Comfortable represents a private 1-2 bedroom apartment, occasional dining out, and a mix of public transport and occasional car use. Upscale includes a spacious apartment in a good location, regular dining out, a personal car, and higher-quality leisure activities. The multipliers are based on real price ranges and adjusted per country, so Budget in Thailand has different implications than Budget in Switzerland.

For couples, costs are not simply doubled but realistically scaled. Rent typically increases by 30-50% (larger apartment but shared space), groceries by about 70-80%, and transport often remains similar when shared. For families, additional costs per child are added: mainly groceries, healthcare, and possibly school fees or childcare. Utilities increase moderately with household size. The calculator uses country-specific household multipliers that account for these economies of scale, rather than simply multiplying per person.

The cheapest countries for German expats are mainly in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia offer living costs 50-70% below German levels. In Europe, Portugal, Hungary, and Bulgaria are particularly affordable. However, beyond pure costs, you should also consider factors like visa requirements, healthcare quality, language barriers, and quality of life. A country with very low costs can quickly become more expensive than expected due to expensive international schools or private health insurance. Use our calculator to explore different scenarios.

Rent covers the monthly apartment rent for housing matching the selected lifestyle tier. Groceries include supermarket shopping and at higher tiers also restaurant visits. Transport covers public transit, taxi rides, and at the upscale tier a personal car. Utilities include electricity, water, gas, heating, and internet. Healthcare covers the average monthly costs for health insurance and co-payments in each country. Entertainment covers leisure, sports, culture, and going out. Not included are one-time moving costs, visa fees, or taxes.

The cost data in our calculator is reviewed quarterly and updated as needed. We take into account current inflation rates, exchange rate fluctuations, and regional market developments. Especially for countries with high inflation (e.g., Turkey, Argentina), actual prices may deviate more between update cycles. The date of the last update is shown at the bottom of the results page. Exchange rates are applied at the time of calculation and can change daily -- for binding financial planning, we recommend checking current exchange rates separately.

The calculator is excellent as an initial orientation point for financial planning of a stay abroad. It shows you how much budget you should plan for different countries. For visa applications, many countries require proof of sufficient financial means -- our calculator results can help you estimate the required amounts. However, note that visa authorities set their own minimum amounts that may differ from our averages. For concrete relocation planning, we recommend cross-referencing the results with local expat forums and current experience reports.

Germany serves as the reference country because our calculator is primarily designed for German-speaking users planning emigration or a stay abroad. By comparing directly with Germany, you can immediately see whether a country is cheaper or more expensive than your current living situation. Germany also works well as a benchmark because it falls in the European middle range for living costs -- neither extremely cheap like Bulgaria nor extremely expensive like Switzerland. All percentage figures (e.g., '35% cheaper') refer to the direct comparison with average German living costs.

Purchasing power and cost of living are closely related but not identical. Our calculator shows the absolute monthly costs in the selected currency -- meaning what you actually need to spend. Purchasing power, on the other hand, describes how much you get for your money in each country. For example, in Thailand absolute costs are lower, and the purchasing power of a euro is particularly high because you get more goods and services for less money. Note that imported goods (electronics, Western brand products) often cost similarly worldwide, while local products and services account for the biggest price differences.
