2026 is a year with 53 calendar weeks
Most years have 52 calendar weeks. 2026 is one of the exceptions: it has 53. The reason is quickly explained — and the consequences range from the appointment diary to payroll.
The reason: the year starts on a Thursday
Under ISO 8601 the first calendar week is the week containing the first Thursday of the year. 1 January 2026 is a Thursday. The week from 29 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 is therefore already week 1. And because 31 December 2026 is also a Thursday, the week from 28 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 still belongs to 2026 — as week 53.
In general: a year has 53 calendar weeks if it starts on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year. This happens roughly every five to six years. The next years with a week 53 are 2032, 2037, 2043 and 2048; the last one was 2020.

If you plan projects in calendar weeks, check whether your plan knows about a week 53 at all. Templates and home-made spreadsheets often silently stop at week 52. "Delivery in week 53" in 2026 means: between 28 December 2026 and 3 January 2027. What matters is that both sides use the same counting method — otherwise "week 1" can quickly turn into a week's delay.

If you are paid weekly or bill services per week, a year with 53 calendar weeks may mean one extra billing week. Monthly salaries are unaffected, as they are not tied to calendar weeks. Week 53 of 2026 contains New Year's Eve and New Year's Day; week 52 contains Christmas Day and the 2nd Christmas Day (Friday and Saturday, 25 and 26 December 2026).
